Balthasar Ardinoijs (bef. 1670 - 1730)

Biography

Balthasar Ardinoijs (1670 - 1730)^[1] was born in Amsterdam, son of Gillis Ardinoijs and Machteline van der Perre. His father died in 1678, and his mother remarried in Maarssen, 1712, with Gerbrand de Beer. They lived on the Springweg in Utrecht, and Gerbrand seems to have been a Canunnik of the Dom^[2]. His two siblings were Martinus and Elisabeth.

1720 Bewindhebber Procinciale Utrechtse Compagnie

Balthasar never married, had no known children. But in 1720 he became one of the bewindhebbers of the Provinciale Utrechtse Compagnie.

On 18 Nov 1720, a notarial deed^[3] was made up to buy 2000 pounds shares at London, in the South Seas Company. It lists all the bewindhebberen, and Henry Pagez was sent to represent them:

• Wij Frederick Middendorp, Andries Oortman, Otto Wilhelm Falck, Baltazar Ardinois, Jeremias van Waeij en Jacob Hiskia Machado, Bewindhebberen van de Geoctroyeerde Provinciale Compagnie van Commercie L^a t' Utrecht, hebben geautoriseerd en volmachtig gemaeckt, gelijk wij autoriteiten en volmachtig moks bij de Heer Henry Pagez mede bewindhebber van gemelte Compagnie, Althans sich bevindende tot Amsterdam Specialistijsch op de ???? naeme en de van onsenswege nevens den Heer Gecommiteerde, als Gesamentlijk Bevind hebbende, te cocistuerende en de te substitueren -- sodanige persoon of personen als denselven sal goedvinden omme tot London in onses name en qualiteiten voorschreven te sien Transporteren en op onsen namen en qualiteiten over te nemen alsulike twee duijsent ponden South Seas Actien bij een of meer partijen die deselve quantiteit uijtemaken als ten behoeve van ons in gemeldee qualiteit als Bewindhebberen getransporteert en overgedragen sullen worden, daer toe de vereijsdete procuratie in formule

This Utrechtse Compagnie was never extremely profitable, had problems with bad management and corruption, but survived until it was broken up in 1755. The assets were sold to various share holders who still wanted to continue its parts.

Death

Balthasar was a bejaarde jonge man (unmarried adult) of 60 years old with burial service (and burial?) in the Dom church^[4]:

• Dom (place of burial service?); dito[=26 Aug 1730]
• d'Heer Baltasar Ardinois bejaarde jonkman laet na mondige vol??? aende Nieuwegr:[acht] ??? over St.Jans Kerkhof doch is overleden tot Rotterdam. Is afgesonken f500,-,- 3 ?? belijdend wapens opgehangen

It may be that his adress on the Nieuwe Gracht was at St.Jans Kerkhof, now named drift. It may also be that he was actually buried in St.Jans Kerkhof. A few words are difficult to make out.

He had no surviving siblings, as his sister Elisabeth had been buried on 5th May of the same year, in Utrecht^[5]. She had been married to a koopman from Hamburg.

In Rotterdam, his testament and last will was made up just before he died on 26 aug 1730, and made official on 5 Sept^[6]. It looks like Balthasar left all his posessions to Catharina Willemina Walewijns, widow of a burgemeester of Rotterdam.
