Jan (Arijse) Hardebol (abt. 1577 - bef. 1664)

Biography

Jan Arijse was born about 1577 in Amsterdam, Holland, Nederland, son of Aris Martz (~1550–<1617). His parents had also another son Jan, baptized on 13-08-1572. That Jan probably died young. (before 1595)

Jan married Sara Hallius (born about 1581 in Leiden, Holland; daughter of Johannes (Hal) Hallius). ^[1]

Their son was Aris Janse (<1618–<1660).

Jan was buried November 3, 1664 in Amsterdam, aged about 87. ": Jan Aerrentsen Hardebol, op de Keijsersgracht, 8." ^[2]

At his marriage he is "beenhouwer" but soon after he turned into a "cramer" (shopkeeper), given as his occupation when buying houses in 1613 and 1630. The house "in de harde bollen" on the nieuwedijk was a shop. This is evidenced by a document reporting a round along the heirs of his half-uncle Jan Thijs (19-03-1627) in the context of a dispute with Jan's widow: "Jan Arents alsoo hij niet thuijs en was aen de winckelmaijt gedaen die saijde dat sijt haer niet aen en trock men mocht kome alshaer mr thuijs was".^[3]

Last name

The name Hardebollen appears at the baptism of this son Arent in 1618: after his name is added "in de twee hardebollen". Of all children, only Arent seems to have used this as last name. Jan, the oldest son, adopted the name Hallius, the name of his maternal grandfather. Hardebollen was the name of the house that Jan bought in 1613: "Harde Bollen, De - Nieuwendijk. E. V. (ook: Bollen, De [twee] harde - ) E. V. = Elias' Vroedschap van Amsterdam." ^[4] Jan Aris bought this house (currently Nieuwendijk 131) on 10-01-1613: “huys en erve staende op de nieuwedijck op de zuyderhoek van de oudebrughstege genaemt de Hardebollen”.^[5] Payment was garanteed by his (half)uncle Weijn Tijs, vleijshouwer and his father Aris Martens vleijshouwer. The oudebrughsteeg is opposite the kolcksteeg, so this must be the house were he lived. The previous owner was Adriaen Willems Hardebol, who still lived there in 1611 (his daughter Catharina married from the nieuwedijk). The house stayed in the family until 09-06-1728^[6].

His last name thus comes from the house, although there is one earlier mentioning of the name: on the list of deakons (diakenen) of the nederduitsch-hervormde gemeente in Amsterdam dated 1610 he is listed as Jan Arends Hardebol. However, this list is made every 5 years only (he is not on the list of 1615), so maybe names were added during the period 1610-1615, or retrospectively.

On 18-07-1630 Jan Arisz, Cramer, bought a house on the Herengracht (currently Herengracht 39) ^[7] "Oostzijde van de Herengracht, belent Ariaen Bauches huijstimmerman, aen suytzijde ende Jan Gerrits waterscheepsman aen de noortsijde strekkende voor van straet tot achter aen de erfgenamen van Lijsbeth Jans." He put two "harde bollen" on the front of the house, and this house is also known as "in de harde bollen" . This is evident when his descendents sell the house on 28-08-1733, a house with "De Twee Harde Bollen in de gevel", situated "staende en liggende op de heerengraft, besuijdende roomolensteegh. Belend van ouds adriaan Bauket aan de zuidzijde en Jan gerritsz waterscheepsman aan de noordzijde. Strekkende voor van de straat tot achter de erfgenamen van lijsbeth Jans."^[8]

Properties and places

At his marriage Jan lived at the Kolck. In the baptism records there are 12 baptisms of their children (with 10 different names in total) and the burial records of "de Nieuwe Kerk en Engelse kerk" (where the children are baptized and Jan and Sara were buried) list 5 children of a Jan Aris / Aerjaens living on the Nieuwedijk. [see research notes]. His son Jan at his marriage lived at the Nieuwedijk, his son Arent at the Kloveniersburgwal. This is probably in the house on the Slijkstraat that Jan bought on 15-03-1630 ^[9] and later sold to his son Arent^[10].

His burial records state he lived at the Keizersgracht. This might be the house of his oldest son Jan: “Jan Hallius coopman woonagtig op de keijsersgragt beij de gouden ketting” ^[11]

Through the years Jan bought other houses and properties. On 18-03-1623 he bought a house in the Ouderbrughsteeg, next to the neighbour of this house on the nieuwedijck^[12]. He also inherited property from his parents and from his half-uncles Weijn Thijs and Jan Thijs.

He bought pieces of land outside the Sint Antoniespoort^{[13] [14]} and also owned 22 morgen of land in "Vegtendael tot Maerssen" in "het gerecht van Maarsseveen" ^[15] which he rented out to a vleeshouwer.

Research Notes

His mother made a last will that makes his ancestry clear ^[16]. She is Aecht Jans, widow of Aris Martens. Her heirs are her children Jan Arisen en Sijbrech Arents as well as the children of her late children Thijs Arisen en Stijntie Aris. Also the wills of his half-uncles Weijn Thijs and Jan Thijs clarify the family relations (see his father for references).

Doopinschrijvingen van Jan zijn onduidelijk. Er zijn 2 doopinschrijvingen gevonden van een Jan van deze ouders, een uit 1572[12] , en een uit 1595[13]. Echter bij zijn huwelijk in 1604 was hij 27 jaar oud, hetgeen 1577 als geschat geboortejaar geeft. Van de broers en zussen is alleen de doop van een Stijn 1575 [14] terug gevonden. Volgens de leeftijd bij huwelijk is Sybrich rond 1590 geboren en Stijntien rond 1593, terwijl die van Tijs[15], [16] geen leeftijd bevat.

Burials of children from Jan Arents on the Nieuwedijck: one in 1612 [17] adding "bij de ouwesteeg" (which might indicate house de hardebollen, although this is just before he bought this house. The father is called Aerjaense, not Aerts; however, also baptism records use Jan Aerjaensz Hardebollen. Another gives as place nieuwedijck "bij de sinte Jacobs Cappel" (not quite the right place)[18], the other just Nieuwedijck with fathers Jan arents [19] Jan Arentsen [20] and hard to read patronym [21]. All children were buried “onder de arm” which means they were small children. However, there might have been other Jan Arisses living on the nieuwedijk. In the codicil of his father-in-law from 2018 [22] only 4 children are mentioned, while 9 had been baptized before that date.

Doopgetuigen kinderen: Johannes Hal (2x ook als Johannis Halijus, vader Sara), Aecht Jans 2x, moeder Jan), Ariaentje Jans, susana Jan (zus van sara), ludou cornelis (vrouw halfoom weijn thijs), regina hudde (vrouw van jan cornelis Koster), trijn ares,sijberich aris (2x, zus van Jan), hester Jans (2x zus van sara), (ook een maal samen) Ariaen Jans (=ariaentje?). Ariaen Jans is niet thuis te brengen, evenals Trijn Ares. Wel is er een Stijn Ares en een Thijs Ares en een Ariaentje Jacobs (vrouw Thijs).
