Henry Allen Arledge was the 5th child of Allen and Eliza Arledge born on Sunday, February 16, 1862, in Hineston , in Rapides Parish, LA, according to family notes.

On the 1880 census, Henry Allen was shown to be living in the house with his mother Eliza Hamilton as Henry A. Aldrich, 18 years of age and a boarder. Then on August 28, 1884, Henry Allen married Nancy Rose Altha West, born January 10, 1866, in Newton County, Texas, copy of marriage license is attached, and is of record in Vol. G, page 106, Marriage Records of Newton County, Texas.

From family oral history, we have been told that Henry first owned one tract of land in Newton County, Texas, where his mother first went to from Louisiana after Allen's death. Then he sold that and obtained a patent on a 160 acre tract, dated December 4, 1908. Also from family oral history, we were told that this place was nearer to Call, that Henry first built a log house, then later on built a better house, and ran a dairy there. We are trying to determine just when he moved over to Merryville, LA. from deed records.

All of the children of Nancy and Henry's were born in Newton County, Texas, and there was an infant child born and buried in the Walters plot as shown in the Trout Creek Cemetery Book. We have not been able to locate a marker for this baby and do not know where the Walters plot is supposed to be. We do know this couple moved with their children over near Merryville, Louisiana, prior to 1917 which is the year Nancy died.

NOTE: NANCY WEST'S FAMILY RESIDED IN NEWTON COUNTY, TEXAS, WHERE LOTS OF THE WEST RELATIVES STILL RESIDE. IN SEARCHING OUT ALL THE CENSUSES FOR THAT AREA, YOU WILL FIND ALL RELATIVES AND FRIENDS WHO PROBABLY HAD TRAVELED TOGETHERFROM THE EAST, I.E. WESTS, HOLMES, SIMMONS, ARLEDGES, ETC.

Legend has it that Nancy went to Niblett s Bluff to take care of Cassie, daughter married to Holden Granger, who was expecting a child. Cassie had the flu and evidently lost the baby (this was in the epidemic of 1917), Mother Nancy took the flu, went home and died December 15, 1917, and was buried at the Meadows Cemetery. The son Johnny told his sister Nan that he dreaded going to World War I (he had been drafted) because he knew he was not going to comeback. Johnny took the flu and followed his mother in death on December 30, 1917, prior to going into the Army

After Nancy died, Henry Allen Arledge married Nancy's first cousin, Georgia, who had previously been married to William Wallace Richardson. Georgia and Wm. Wallace had a son Bill who was the Sheriff of Jefferson County, Texas, in the early 1940s, had Tom Richardson and Bevis Richardson. There were more Richardson children as shown by the probate which had to be filed in Beauregard Parish, LA. By Henry Arledge. The Richardson's had lived in Orange County, Texas, owning property in the Claiborne West League (possibly relatives of Georgia) which was sold after Henry Allen married Georgia.

There are lots of stories that can be told by grandchildren still alive at this time about Henry Allen Arledge, too lengthy to be included now. We are attaching various pictures to this section from the Arledge reunion on the river near Uncle Allen and Aunt Zeta's place that took place on the Saturday before Easter, 1941. No one could ever have imagined that that would be the last time so many family members would be together with Grandpa still alive, because he passed away on July 17, 1941 at the home of his son, Allen and wife, Zeta, and is buried at the Meadows Cemetery beside his wife Nancy.

Traveling south from Merryville on LA 389, go 5.5 miles to find Meadows Cemetery. Turn right through an iron gate over a pipe cattle guard. There is a sign arched over the gate with the name "Meadows Cemetery." Don't look for the usual green highway marker to indicate the cemetery---it isn't there (1991)!

This is a large cemetery with a cyclone fence surrounding it. The cemetery is just off the highway and can be seen coming from the south, but isn't readily seen coming from the north due to the curve in the road. Just watch your mileage---5.5 miles from US 190. There is a flag pole inside the cemetery fence, which was dedicated by VFW

At Meadows, I had a feeling of peacefulness. It was quiet, with the traffic noises and the sound of the birds, rain frogs, the breeze in the tree tops, and the distant sound of someone doing a bit of carpentry muffled. In case you are a bird watcher, this would be a good place to see many of them.
