Caroline was born 21 December 1837 on Wyandot Reserve lands at Upper Sandusky, Ohio. She was the daughter of Silas Armstrong and his first wife Sarah Preston.
[1][2]
Caroline was just five years old when her mother died in 1842. One year later Caroline and her siblings were among the Wyandot families who left the Ohio Valley in 1843 under the leadership of her father, one-time Wyandot Principal Chief Silas Armstrong. By 1853 they had settled around the area of today’s Kansas City in Wyandotte County.
[3][4]
Caroline married Charles Henry Van Fossen in Wyandotte, Kansas in 1857.[5][6] They had seven children.
[7][8][9]
In 1867 Caroline Van Fossen and her family were placed on the Wyandot Tribal Roll of Wyandots living in Kansas and Oklahoma, including those who never consented to becoming U.S. Citizens. Included were herself, her husband Charles, and four of their children: Ella, Lewis, Thomas and Francis.
[10]
Charley Van Fossen died in 1885. In September 1887 “Mrs. C. H. Van Fossen” married a George T. Morris.
[11] She is named as “Carrie M. Morris, formerly Carrie M. Van Fossen” in a newspaper notice regarding a lawsuit over some property in Kansas City.
[12]
By 1900, "Caroline Morris" is living in her Kansas City home with two of her children, Wilbur and Emma;
[13] and George Morris is living as a boarder in the home of Carrie's oldest child, Ella Parr.
[14]
Caroline died in 1901 and is buried in the Huron Indian Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.[15]
