Is this our Samuel???? National Library of Australia, PARRAMATTA. [FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT. MUNICIPAL COUNCIL. The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Thursday 20 February 1862 p 8 Article:] STRUCK BY LIGHTNING --" During the thunderstorm at Jerry's Plains last week, the electric fluid smashed many trees into atoms. It entered the dwelling of Mr. Samuel Arndell and struck him, paralysing one side. It also appears to have touched the legs of Mrs. Arndell, seriously injuring them, and finally completely shivered the bedstead in the room to pieces." -Singleton Times.

The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser Tuesday 1 July 1884 Page 6 Fire at Narrabri. Narrabri Herald, June 25.: " A disastrous fire occurred in Maitland street early on Sunday morning, at the Fitzroy Hotel, kept by Mr. Samuel Arndell. The landlord was the first to discover the fire, he hearing a crackling noise in the billiard-room, and on his going to see what it was, he found the room to be one mass of flame. Having given the alarm, he turned his attention to saving the furniture, which, with the ready assistance of the neighbours, he succeeded in removing. It was early found that nothing could be done to save building, the fire having gained too strong a hold, and it is doubtful if, had the fire been discovered earlier, whether, with the limited supply of water at hand, the fire could have been stayed, the building being a very old one. The neighbours around were quickly on the scene and rendered every assistance, it being entirely due to their efforts that the stables and outbuildings were saved. The main building was burnt to the ground. The buildings were insured for £1000, in the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Company, of which Messrs. Goldman and Co, are the local agents. The hotel contained thirty-one rooms, and the proprietor estimates the value of the stock destroyed at about £400 ; his total loss over the insurance he estimates at about £500. Mr. C. J. O'Connor, solicitor, is a very heavy loser by the fire, having had a portion of his law library destroyed, also a quantity of wearing apparel and jewellery. Mr. Arndell only secured a renewal of his license about a week ago, but fortunately had not sent the license fee. We believe that the proprietor does not intend to re-build the hotel."
