Maria was born in 1833 to daughter of Pasquale Artale and Rosalia Oliveri ^[1]. In 1864 at age 31, she married 31-year-old Giacchino Artale, described as middle class, and they had at least one child. Maria and Giacchino were still living as of 3 January 1889 ^[2].
