He married Margaret Greig in December 1780. [2]
Records show that Alexander Aughterlonie (1757-1809) married Margaret Greig (1757-1844) in 1780 at Leuchars. They lived at various farms within Leuchars parish - Pusk, Strathburn, Balwhinzie, Brackmont Miln and ultimately Lucklaw Hill. It is likely that Alexander was at first an itinerant ploughman, later becoming a feuar (a farmer with a life tenancy). Alexander died in 1809, aged 51, and Margaret in 1844, aged 86. Both were buried at Leuchars. They had in fact eleven children (six sons and five daughters). Their six sons Alexander, George, David, Peter, William and James and their daughter Janet all married and had families, while four daughters (Jean, Helen, Ann and Catherine) died in childhood. All six sons left Leuchars on becoming adults, although David and William both returned to the parish in their final years.
Alexander died 30 October 1809, buried Leuchars Old Cemetery, Leuchars, Fife, Scotland. [3]
In a letter of 28 October 1920, James Auchterlonie, his grandson, says, Then as to the line I belong to my Grandfather's name was Alexander Auchterlonie and his wife's name was Margaret Greig they had ten of a Family and lived at the back of Lucklawhill in Leuchars Parish six Sons and four Daughters only one of the latter came to womanhood but the sons all had Families. Alexander the oldest was a sailor was taken by the press gang but escaped took his Mother's name and latterly was lost at sea and left a son who was also a sailor and is said to have sailed the first steamship to China. 2. George who lived and died at Bruntshiels, near Peat Inn [in the northern part of Kilconquhar Parish] had one son and three daughters his son was at one time schoolmaster at Carnoustie and went to Glasgow where he died his youngest son Minister at Craigdam Aberdeenshire for a number of years, his oldest is living in Carnoustie but rather frail. 3. Peter who had the Farm at Garpit had one son who died in young manhood it strikes me that Peter had something to do with Carphin as Manager or something it's like a dream to me but I am not sure, he died in Tayport. 4. David had three sons and one daughter Alexander his oldest son had Scelmervie and the white house in Luthrie for some time I was wondering if the Mrs David Auchterlonie that you mentioned was his eldest son's widow. My Father's youngest Brother James went to England he had one son who looked us up about forty years ago but we have not heard of him since then. My father was the second youngest of the family was 38 years a Servant on Pittachope where all his family of four were born two sons and two daughters of which I was the youngest all these are dead that I have written of. My Father's name was William born in the Parish of Leuchars. My Mothers name was Cathrine Grandison born in Abernethy Parish and as I said lived at Pittachope and from there went to Luthrie for two years and then to Brunton for five years I was ten years old when we left Brunton and went to Jeaniston near Ladybank for ten years then in 1868 we went to Bruckly in Leuchars Parish where in 72 my Father died 72 years of Age.
