Biography

George Frederick Ault was born on August 4,1793 in the Iroquois Settlement in Ontario, Canada to Michael Ault and Nancy Brouse. He was baptized on the 25th of August of that same year. [1]

According to research done by Dr. Garnett Ault,[1] George's first marriage was to Miranda Ramond, the daughter of John Ramond, on 28 August 1809. She died in 1823, likely at the birth of her third child. Ault identified those three children (without source) as follows:

  • John William Ault, b. 1815
  • George Nelsson Ault, b. 1816
  • William D. Ault, b. 1823

George Frederick Ault was recorded as the bondsman for several marriage bonds in Ontario between 1808 and 1818. In later years, he was identified as George Frederick Ault, yeoman, of Williamsburg. He was listed as Frederick Ault in one instance, but even so, he still signed the document as George Frederick Ault. [2]

George married Mary Dillabough on 9 March 1824.[1] Mary's full name is also displayed on their shared tombstone.[3]

The 1851 census noted that the Aults had lost a family member that year, which coincides with George's death in October. His widow, Mary, aged 44, was living with their son, Guy,[4] aged 24 in Matilda, and seven other family members. [5] Mary lived for much of the rest of her life with her son, Guy, except for a period she spent with her daughter, Mary Atchison, and Mary’s family in New York. [6][7]

George's death date was 4 October 1851. He was buried in the Iroquois Cemetery, near Matilda. His wife, identified on their shared tombstone as Mary Dillabough, died in 1898. [3]

Research Notes

A George Ault was recorded on the 1851 agricultural census for Matilda. He owned 4 acres, all of which were under cultivation. This may be George's son from his first marriage.
