Henry was born in 1622. Henry Avera-65 was most likely born in England. He was Baptised on ma888y 02 1624 at St Giles Cripplegate, Londond England. His first marriage was to be Ann (Nichols-5875) with whom he had 2 children: Alexander Avera-76 and Thomas Avera-15. He immigrated to Virginia in 1642. His second wife was Jane (believed to be Boult-36) with whom he had 2 children: Charles Avera-75 and Henry Avery-74. He passed away about 1695. (meece-70 Sept 2018)[1]
this line is believed to be French Huguenot . Henry Avera's line is believed to have fled France because of the religious wars.
note that some researchers tie this line back several more generations in England -- see "sources" for the references used by some to make this claim.
THE MAJORITY VIEW OF RESEARCHERS SEEM TO ACCEPT A HUGUENOT HERITAGE AND THAT WOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH HENRY AVERA MARRYING THE WIDDOW JANE POOLE (her first husband John Poole is well documented to be French Huguenot as documented by the Virginia Huguenot Society)
Caveat Emptor: the profile manager makes no claim to be an Avera expert. My information is a by-product of my Pool / Poole research. I am aware that there are significantly different views among published family trees for this line. This write up could benefit greatly if a Avera expert would accept profile manager responsibilities for Henry Avera and related persons. It is recognized that this write up is in great need of additional primary references.
this write up is "skewed" toward its "Poole" connections because that is what the current profile manager has studied. We need an Avera / Avery expert to expand and re-write this profile. Henry Avera was 2nd husband to Jane (Boult) Avera. Most genealogies refer to her by the name "Jane Avera". Her first husband was John Poole. She had children by both men and outlived them both.
According to several researchers, he was married to Anne Nichols on 25 Apr 1639 in Radley, Berkshire England, and they immigrated to Yorke VA together. (note that there are many Henry Avera / Avery men in England as shown by records at Ancestry.com; - including others with a different birthdate but with a similar father's name { Richard Avery}, and a wide variety of cities . Some of this early information may be subject to significant revision / correction as better references are found and indexed).
He immigrated to VA in 1642 (Passenger and Immigration Lists Index 1500's-1900s) according to different biographies, he was either born in France or England in either case, he is believed to be French Huguenot. The following is a quote from William J Avery's web page: "The Avera family most likely originally came from France and emmigrated to England in the 1500s to avoid persecution in France during the French Huguenot movement there." [See: "Sources" below for a web site that states Henry's father was Richard Avera Sr., born in 1589, in Warwickshire, England. If this connection is valid, it may be that it was Henry's grandfather [ Richard Avery's father] who was the Huguenot who migrated out of France for religious reasons. Additional research / documentation is needed to fully resolve this family history prior to VA immigration / emmigration}]
Bill Avery states on his web page that "The most widely accepted belief of the origin of the Avera Families is that the family originally came from France during the French Huguenot movement during the 16th and 17th century when they were being persecuted for their protestant beliefs. They migrated to England, Wales and other places and eventually to the new world ~ America. I have read this is several different places. Our Henry was either born in England, or possibly came there from France. In any case, the ship he took to America left from England and he arrived in Virginia in 1642. Most likely, if he wasn't born in France, his parents were."
Some researchers state that Henry Avera's parents were: Father - Richard Avera Sr, (b. 1589, Filongley Warwickshire England ) Mother: Amphillis Foxley. Some researchers have tied this line to that of Wm Avery (see references under "sources" below)/
The first known Avera to arrive in the Virginia Colonies was Henry Avera, who arrived in 1642 with his wife Ann [Nichols - m. 1639 in Berkshire, England]. Actually, Henry was the only AVERA who came to Virginia who actually spelled his name as AVERA on a continual basis, just as the Avera families who came and settled in Johnston County, area NC did." (wtpoolnote: there are documented exceptions where alternative spellings are shown. Bill Avery's point on the usual spelling is correct; however, was not uncommon to see alternative spellings in this time when so few were literate. It is also possible that some spelling variations are due to transcription errors. See the 1941 publication "Wills and Administrations of Elizabeth City Co VA by Blanche Chapman to see alternate spellings of Avera / Averra / Avery - including this important one: " Receipt of Henry Avery to his mother Jane Avery for the estate left him by his father, Henry Avery November 11,1695")
Note also interactions between Poole / Pool and Avera / Avery in both VA and NC.

Many researchers show Henry Avera Sr to be descended from English for one or more generations. While most Avera genealogists seem to accept that the Avera line was French Huguenot; some claim several generations of descent within England -- for example see reference below to William Avera in "Sources". ADDITIONAL RESEARCH / DOCUMENTATION OF THIS WOULD BE USEFUL. IF YOU ARE AN AVERA EXPERT, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD ADDITIONAL OR ALTERNATIVE INFORMATION. Clearly different researchers have come to different conclusions.
