Amos Geer Avery was born in 1822 at Ledyard, Connecticut, the ninth & final child (son) of Nathan Avery and Matilda Babcock.
He married 13 Mar 1860 @ Great Bend, New York, Cornelia Amanda Johnson [b. 16 Apr 1833 near Great Bend, NY, daughter of Levi & Rachel Johnson]; they had 3 children, of which the first two died young:
Per the Avery genealogy, Amos Geer Avery was a physician; after studying in the office of his uncle, Christopher S. Avery, and taking lectures in medical colleges in Connecticut and New Hampshire, he was graduated from the Medical Institute at Louisville, Ky., in 1845; went to California; returned in 1857 to Connecticut; in the Civil War, he was in the Burnside expedition to North Carolina, was surgeon in the 44th N. Y. reg't, and later was chosen to examine men and supervise army camps and hospitals in New York, until state recruiting stopped. He claimed to be the first man to use chloroform in a capital operation in 1846.
