Notes to be used in post-merge clean up Ann Catherine Jorgensen Andersen Babcock

The mother of Annie Andersen Moore

Ane Catherine Jørgensdatter Andersen Babcock was the daughter of Jørgen Hansen and Charlotte Amelia Pedersen. She was born February 8, 1830, at Sønder Thise Sogn, Denmark. One of a family of ten children, she grew to womanhood in Denmark.

On December 28, 1855, she married Mongens Andersen of Gislum, North Jutland, Denmark. The practice in Denmark at the time was to announce a marriage by BANNS, three consecutive Sundays in a row. They would then live together and when the marrying Priest came through, he would then perform the marriage. To them, four children were born: Andreas (17 Apr 1852-8 Nov 1864); Jørgen (George) (16 Aug 1857-5 Jan 1858); a second son named Jørgen (George) (15 Jan 1859-28 Dec 1921); and Annie (30 Nov 1861-27 May 1939).

In 1861 she heard the Gospel message and accepted it; the only member of her family to become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints at that time. So thoroughly was the knowledge of the truthfulness of the Gospel implanted into her very soul; so profound her conviction that she might gather with the Saints of God; her life unified in its purpose and with-"An eye single to the Glory of God-" she left her home, her native land.

Myths about George Babcock (what is known so far)

  • George Babcock went to California with his wife Amanda and returned to Utah after she died. Not true.

---Probable source of the myth: History of Middlefield, Massachusetts, which says, " " ---What the records show:

Amanda outlived George. Amanda died after the 1880 census; George died in 1874.
So far, there is no proof that George Babcock was ever in California.
Amanda is in the 1850 US Census in Weber County, UT, with the Kingsley family (no George).
Amanda Babcock is with the Kingsley family in Placer, CA in the census. First record of Amanda in California.

Amanda Babcock & daughter Aseneth Babcock are in these California records: 1870 census, 1880 census.

  • George was married to Ann Griffith (of Wales) for a very short time: "1 month, 26 days." Not true.

---Probable source of myth: the term "1 month, 26 days" is used in the death notice published in the Millenial Star for Ann, wife of George Babcock, which says that she died at the" age of 67 years, 1 month, 26 days." ---
