John was born in England and apparently may have been a stowaway on a ship to America. A rancher from Texas found him and took him on as a ranch hand. John herded cattle and rode the Chisem Trail before settling down in Nebraska and married Josephene Rowley and started a small farm near North Platte. They raised a family there.
