He is listed at the age of 16 as living with the family of Henry Post (whom I presume is a relative of J. Bentley's mother). He is listed as a cigar maker. [1]
There is anecdotal evidence that the John B. Ball who is listed in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts census for 1855 is this J. Bentley. It shows his profession as "Sigar Maker." [2] There is also a Margaret Ball listed with the Condon family. She is 16. She was born in New Hampshire. I don't know how these two Balls ended up with the Condons.
