Alfred Ball was born in about 1890 in Clowne, Derbyshire, England. His parents were John Ball and Mary Jane (Farrar) Ball. The child born after him (in 1896) was called 'Fred', so it was natural that Alfred became 'Alf'.

Alfred's father, John, was still a coal miner, and had now been joined by both Alf and Fred below ground.

Alfred's marriage to Florence M Thorpe was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1913 in the Worksop district.[3]

Also in 1913, Alfred had finished his training at Cresswell Athletic, and began playing for Lincoln City Football Club. He played for them for two seasons, but league play was halted because of World War I (1914-1918).

After the war, Alfred joined Mansfield Town Football Club, then transferred in 1922 to Ilkeston United.
