Biography

Eliza was born about 1818. She passed away in 1923. Her pension application showing her first husband died in 1870 might explain why she was using the name Pruett in the 1870 census, but not how the exact family relationships align given that her son with Aheron was born about 1867. However, based on the obituary below Joseph Henry is believed to be her son with David Aheron.

The Bee, Danville, Virginia, Friday, November 16, 1923, page 1. Mrs. Eliza A'Herron, Danville's oldest resident, so far as known, passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 103 years at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas A'Herron on Third Avenue.

According to her last pension policy received from the government she was 103 years of age, having been born in 1818 in Pittsylvania County near Chatham, being the daughter of Jay Barber, who fought under and was acquainted with Geo. Washington in the Revolutionary War.

She was first married to Abraham Pruitt of Pittsylvania County and to them were born six children, two of whom are still living. They are John and Hezekiah Pruitt of Danville. Long after the death of her husband she was married again to Davis A'Herron, of Ireland. Of this union four children were born, three of which are living. They are I.S. A'Herron, of Sutherlin; J.H. A'Herron of Spray, N. C., and Thos. A'Herron, this city. She is survived by many grand-children, a number of great grand children and also many great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of her grand-daughter, Mrs. B.S. Gosney, North Main Street. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Wilson of the Primitive Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. J. Cyde(sic) Holland. Interment was made in Leemont Cemetery.
