Also in the 1850 Census for Southampton County, Va. is a Clary Whitehead, black, age 25, in the household of Samuel Brown, black, age 35. Clary had children: Marzella Whitehead, age 5 and one-year-olds Littleton and Jacob Whitehead. William B Shands, age 30, white, lawyer, was in the household, as was Amos Artis, age 26, black. Clary Whitehead might be a relative of Alstacia's father.[3]
In 1850 John Whitehead of St Luke's Parish, Southampton, Virginia owned slaves: 1 black female age 65; 1 black male age 55; 1 black female age 32; 1 black female age 29; 1 black male age 24; 1 black male age 12; 1 black male age 10; 1 black female age 8; 1 black male age 6; 1 black male age 2; 1 black male age 3 months; 1 black female age 40; 1 black female age 28; 1 black male age 22; 1 black male age 19; 1 black female age 25; 1 black female age 10.[4] In 1850 Harriet Whitehair or Whitehead owned slaves: 1 black female age 30; 1 black male age 10; 1 black female age 6; 1 black female age 6; 1 black male age 4.[5]
Death certificate of her son Branch has LNAB Whitehead.[6] Marriage certificate of son Emmett has LNAB Barton.[7]
The 1870 Census lists her race as mulatto. She was age 26, with husband Richard in Loudoun County, Virginia. Children were daughter Viney age 5, Bedy age 4 and Richard age 2.[8]
Age 36 in 1880. Children were Venie, Bedie, William J., Juliett, Martha, Riodick and Emmet W.[9]
Age 55 in 1900, born June 1844. She had been married 47 years. Mother of 12, 11 then living. Daughter Susanna was b Dec 1881, age 18. Son Daniel T was b Aug 1882, age 17. Daughter Hattie M was b Nov 1888 age 11. Daughter Marthey was age 8, b May 1892.[10]
Alstacia was age 72 in 1920, living with husband Richard Artis in Newsoms, Southampton, Virginia.[11]
Research Notes
There is another Whitehead family in Southampton County in 1860, but it doesn't make sense that the S. Whitehead of this family would be the daughter of Julia Barden and unknown Whitehead, as this family is white.
In 1860 S. Whitehead was age 12. She was in the family of W. Whitehead, farmer, age 42, b Virginia. East Side Nottaway River, Southampton, Virginia. The wife of W Whitehead was N Whitehead, age 30. M Whitehead (female) was age 15. S. Whitehead was age 12; M. Whitehead (female) was age 10; O. Whitehead (female) was age 8; W. Whitehead (male) was age 5; T. Whitehead
(female) was age 1; H. Joyner (male), laborer, was age 16. The race of this household is not recorded but is assumed to be white.[12]
