Herbert Simeon Barkell was born about 1883 in Kerang, Victoria, Australia, son of Martha (Long) Barkell and John Barkell.^{[citation needed]}

He married Clarice Myrtle Collins in 1907 in Victoria.^[1][2] Their son was:

• Herbert John Lonington Barkell (1908–1987)

Herbert died on 13 May 1952 in East Melbourne, Victoria, aged 68 years.^[3][4]
