Eli 'Henry' Barnes was born in North Haven, New Haven, Connecticut, on January 17, 1836. He was the son of Byard Barnes and Cleora Lindsley.
In 1850, he lived with his parents and siblings in North Haven, New Haven, Connecticut.[1] In 1862, he appears on the IRS tax rolls, residing in Plymouth, Connecticut.[2]
At the age of 26, Henry married Jennie Elizabeth Cargill on December 25, 1862, in New Haven, New Haven, when she was 25.[3] They had three children - Eli Jr. (died young), Jennie Cleora (died at age 6), and Clara Maria.
In July 1863, Henry registered for the Civil War Draft in New Haven County, Connecticut, where he is shown as married and working as a clerk.[4] There is no record that he served during the Civil War.
Jennie died in March 1869. Henry remarried to Esther Clarissa Post in 1870 in Connecticut. They had one child - Bayard.
In 1870 and 1880, Henry and Esther lived with their children New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut, where he worked as a pork packer.[5][6] In 1890, his arrival in New York City on a ship departing from Liverpool and Queenstown is recorded.[7]
In 1900, the couple lived with their son in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut, where Henry worked as a pork packing merchant.[8]
As a young man, Henry had entered the meatpacking business with his brother Herbert, and in 1870, became a founding member of Sperry & Barnes, pork packers and provision dealers in New Haven. That company was purchased by Swift & Company, at which point he and his brother became directors, holding stock worth half a million dollars. He was the chief owner of W.H. Chapman company of Middletown, in the saddlery business, in which his son Bayard worked. He also served as director for several other corporations.[9][10]
Henry reached 68 years of age and died in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut on October 25, 1904, after suffering a massive stomach hemorrhage.[11][9][10][12][13][14] He was buried in Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut.[15]
His will was probated in November, 1904, and his son Bayard was named executor.[16]
