Biography
John Barnes was born in Middlesex, England.
John Barnes migrated from England to New Zealand.
John was born about 1841[1] in Hackney, Middlesex, England.[2] His father was James Barnes, an umbrella maker.[3]
In 1851 he was living in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England[4].
On 26 Oct 1868, at St Bartholomew of Hackney, he married Ann Walsham.[3]
As of 1871 he was a shoemaker living in Mile End, London.[2] Daughter Susan had been born the previous year in the Mile End Workhouse.
He emigrated to New Zealand with Ann, Susan(3) and James(9mo) on the Star of India, 26 Sep 1873.[5]
In 1882 he served two months' imprisonment for larceny of a flitch of bacon from a Kaiapoi shop.[6]
He was caretaker at the Kaiapoi Cemetery, but had left by October 1890.[7]
In October 1890 he was charged with poaching trout from the Waimakariri. He had stolen the boat and net, and seven cauliflowers.[8] He fled the region before his court date, going first to Kaikoura, then Wellington and Palmerston North where he was caught.[9] He was remanded on bail at Christchurch on 6 Jan 1891[10]
This led to a conviction and sentence of 7 days labour, on 12 Jan 1891.[11] He was 5'2", fresh complexion, dark brown eyes, light grey hair. He had an anchor tattoo on his left arm.[12]
As of 1906 John and Ann were living in Terrace End, Palmerston North.[13]
He passed away 2 Jul 1909 age 67 at Palmerston North, New Zealand.[14][15] He is buried at Terrace End Cemetery, Palmerston North, block P01 plot 669.[16]
Research Notes
Not sure when they moved to Palmerston North -- perhaps immediately after the jail term. In the 1896 electoral roll there are John Barnes (labourer) and Ann Barnes(wife) at Palmerston North; also they might be referred to in an 1892 news clipping for James Barnes death.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
