The long expected Theresa has arrived at last, with 223 Immigrants, having been out from Plymouth since the 7th January. She touched at Madeira, where she left the 24th January, and shortly after, the typhus fever broke out and raged to such an extent that it created terror throughout the whole ship, and she was consequently obliged to put into Pernambuco ; she there went into Quarantine, and did not leave that place until the 1st May. She next put into the Cape, and left on the 5th July. Thirty-three persons died during the voyage; ten out of them from typhus fever, and the remainder from various other diseases ; amongst the number were a Mr. Bissett and a Miss Bell. "He and his second wife, Mary Hovenden, migrated to Australia with William's three children from his first marriage and their own six sons. They came on the Theresa, which arrived in Sydney on 25th August, 1842. It had been a horrific journey. Typhoid fever had broken out when the ship was at Pernambuco, Brazil. No help at all was given to the passengers by the local authorities there and there were many deaths and near starvation on the ship. The British authorities later made a formal complaint to Brazil about this callous treatment. Mary and William lost their two youngest sons - Thomas, aged 2, and Albert, aged just 8 months."
