Helen Barrie was born March 23, 1812 in Slamannan, Sterling, Scotland. Helen was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Stevenson) Barrie. [Note: There was another Helen Barrie born in Falkirk on Aug. 16, 1815 to George and Margaret (Turnbull) Barrie; however, the Scotland Censuses report that the Helen who married James Harley was the elder Helen born to Thomas and Margaret.]
Helen married James Harley on June 14, 1833 in Bothkennar, Sterling, Scotland. They resided 1st in Cumbernauld, Dunbarton, Scotland and later in Old Monkland, then New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland where James was an ironstone miner and later a coal miner. They lastly returned to their birthplace of Falkirk where they lived out the rest of their lives.

Helen passed away on Jan. 5, 1865 in Falkirk leaving her husband a widower. Her death record includes her husband's name, her maiden name, and name of her son William, who was named as informant on her death record. Helen's husband, James, would pass away 6 mos. later.
