James Madison Barrow was my father's grandfather. He remembered him well and told me about the last time he saw him alive. I am sure about his birth date from census records, His marriage record to Alcey Jane Burch on 12 Oct., 1881 is recorded in Alabama County Marriage Records. His death is recorded in Florida Death Index and Find A Grave Index.
He is buried in Old Bethel Cemetery in Crestview, Florida in Okaloosa Co. along with Alcey Jane Burch Barrow, his parents, brother and some of his children. I have been there a number of times.
The morning of his death, he tied and broke my father's shoe string. He asked my father (then five years old) what he would like for him to bring him back from town. Dad asked for a bag of peanuts and some new shoestrings. Before he returned, he was run over by a car and killed; driven by a man who had had a dispute with him over a hog. Dad said that they had gardenias all around his grandpa and that he never could stand the smell of gardenias again. This account was given to me by my father and verified by a cousin. This account was given by my father, Lewey F. Barrow (son of Nicholis) to me Patricia Barrow Freese. I can't remember the date.
