Biography from Mae Belle Barrow's The Barrow Family of Virginia 1620-1972

JOSEPH LEWIS BARROW, son of WILLIAM BARROW, SR.. and PRISCILLA HAWKES, married MARY OGBURN (RASH) on 12-25-1821. He was a twin brother of VIRGINIA (JEAN) BARROW. He paid tax on 76 acres of land on CEDAR CREEK in 1815, 31-1/3 acres having been purchased from Wm. I. Dunivant. Also, 25 acres on Great Creek, and in 1835 he paid taxes on 126-2/3 acres and 25 acres on 147 1/2 acres from his father's estate (WILLIAM BARROW, SR.). He began buying up land and became a large land owner before he died. In 1837, he paid tax on 855 acres of land. He witnesed the marriage bon od NANCY BARROW and he witnessed the will of JOHN BARROW, SR. on 11-8-1828 in BRUNSWICK CO., VA. Issue:

A. COLONEL BENJAMIN LEWIS BARROW, C.S.A., born 1824 and died 1888, married his first cousin, LUCY CHAPPELLE BARROW (b. 1838 d. 1878, daughter of WILLIAM JOHNSON BARROW) on May 20, 1858.

B. EDWARD BARROW, b. 1828 d. 1895, married LOUISA JANE PEACE (b. 1839 d. 1922), daughter of REV. WILLIS HARRIS PEACE, on June 2, 1858. He served in the CIVIL WAR.

C. ANDREW J. BARROW, married MARGARET BRUCE BARRET SNYDOR (sic: Mary Elizabeth Margaret Bruce (Barrett) Sydnor Barrow, a widow, on Nov. 8, 1859. He served in the CIVIL WAR.

Secondly, JOSEPH LEWIS BARROW, married MARY JANE BROWDER on June 24, 1839. She died 4-8-1898 and was listed as being 16 years old when she married. Issue:

D. CHARLES SPENCE BARROW, b. 2-14-1856 d. 9-15-1917, married SOPHIA ESTELLE POWELL (b. 7-22-1867) on Dec. 22, 1887. She was the daughter of ELLEN HUFF AND ROBERT SIMMONS POWELL.

E. SALLIE EUPHEMIA BARROW, b. 11-26-1845 d. 6-14-1880, became the second wife of her cousin, ROBERT BRUCE BARROW, on 8-29-1877. He was born 5-8-1839 and died 11-9-1912.

F. MARY JANE BARROW, b. 10-12-1847 d. 6-27-1910, was spinster and is buried at Macedonia Methodist Church.

G. MARCELLUS FRANK BARROW, b. 1-14-1849 d. 10-8-1873, was a bachelor and died at home.

H. WILLIAM W. BARROW, b. 3-14-1851 d. 11-6-1873 in Ketucky. Never married.

JOSEPH LEWIS BARROW died testate in BRUNSWICK CO., VA. on Aug. 9, 1857. A sale of his properties was held 12-3-1857 by his Administrator, BENJAMIN LEWIS BARROW, COLONEL, C.S.A. An Inventory of his Estate is in Order Book 17, page 230.Joseph was born about 1791. He passed away in 1858.
