James Bartlett was pardoned and released before the First Fleet departed.
James Bartlett was tried with his brother Samuel at Winchester, Hampshire on 1 March 1785 for the theft of several hundred pounds of rope yarn at Portsmouth. He was sentenced to death but reprieved to transportation for 7 years on the 26th.
There was a petition from his wife Mary and three children. The petition had several signatures and one man wrote that he often employed Bartlett in storehouses, and had found him honest.
On 6 January 1787, he was delivered from the Ceres hulk to the Alexander, part of the First Fleet.
He received a Free Pardon and he was released on 27 January.
Note that his year of birth 1750 is a GUESS. There was no record of his age in trial and convict records.
