Elisha Bartlett was born in October of 1804 in Smithfield, Rhode Island, the son of Otis Bartlett and Waite Buffum.
He married Elizabeth Slater in May of 1829, also in Smithfield.[1]
He passed away on 19 Jul 1855 and was buried at the Slatersville Cemetery in Priovidence, Rhode Island.[2]
Elisha Bartlett earned his medical degree from Brown University in 1826. He was also appointed as Professor of Pathological Anatomy and Materia Medica at the Berkshire Medical Institute in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1832,Bartlett taught at a number of medical schools including Transylvania University, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Vermont Medical College, Woodstock, Vermont, the University of Louisville, where he was Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, the University of the City of New York, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, where he was Chair of Materia Medica and Medical Jurisprudence. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1845.[3]
In addition to writng poetry, Elisha also published multiple essays in the medical literature thoughout his career, including perhaps his most classic, "An Essay on the Philosophy of Medicine," in 1844.
In October of 1836 he was elected as the first Mayor of Lowell, Massachusetts. Following his tenure, he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1841.
