Marsham Charles Bertram Barton was born on 26th September 1919 at Wellington, New Soth Wales, Australia. He was the son of Robert Barton and Edith A'Beckett.[1]
On 4th June 1940, Marsham enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) for service overseas during the Second World War. He was posted to the Australian Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery.[2] The regiment undertook defensive duties in Egypt during the North African campaign in early 1941, before taking part in the Syria–Lebanon campaign. Occupation duties followed before the regiment was brought back to Australia in early 1942, in response to Japan's entry into the war. The regiment subsequently fought two significant battles in New Guinea in 1942–1943 at Milne Bay and Buna before undertaking garrison duties around Port Moresby until early 1944. Withdrawn to Australia, the regiment's final campaign came when it was committed to the Borneo campaign, taking part landing at Balikpapan. Marsham was demobilised from the AIF on 29th November 1945.
Marsham married Jocelyn Margaret Pentland in 1947 in St John's Church of England (Anglican Church), Darlinghurst, New South Wales.[3]
He passed away, aged 92 years, on 29th August 2012 at Cremorne, New South Wales and his ashes are placed at Northern Suburbs Crematorium, North Ryde.[4] He was survived by Joan, Andrew (deceased), Ginny, Gilly, Virginia, Judith and Penny and their families.
