Oren was born about 1770. He passed away in 1842. [1]
Orrin Bass was born between 1760 and 1770 based on the 1840 Iredell census. No record of birth or baptism has been found yet. He married Mary Unknown who was 70 years old in 1850, b in Virginia.
Orren's parents appear to be Jacob Bass and Tabitha Ann Fuller. The online (Family Search) record of division of slaves to heirs of Jacob Bass in Franklin County, NC 1792 supports this line of descendancy. In it, Orran Bass gets one negro man named Cesar. Other heirs of Jacob Sr are: Solomon, Jacob Jr, Garret Goodloe, Alexander, Samuel Dukes, Jordan, Warren, and Reddick Bass. The administrator was Thomas Bass.
In the 1790 census of Franklin (county?), North Carolina there are a few Bass households listed, although Orren's is not among them. However some of the same names from the slave division do appear, Jacob Bass SR has 3 males over 16, 1 male under 16 and 3 females, nearby are Jacob Bass Jr, Theophilus Bass and Riddick Bass households.
In 1800 census, there is an Aaron Boss age 26-44 in Salisbury, Iredell Co, NC. 2 m under 10, 1 m 10-15, 1 f 10-15, 1 f 16-25. If that last female listed is supposed to be Mary, it is not a perfect fit. Mary would be about 30 years old.
The children of Orrin and Mary Bass are William S 1790-1863; Archibald M 1797-1860; Elizabeth b c 1801; Ezekiel Simon 1802-1888; John Franklin b c 1805; Sarah or Sally b 1810-1811; Mary Epsy 1812-1820; Lerrisa or Terrisa b 1816; Angeline or Ann b 1819, John 1820-1899. This may not be a complete list.
Oren Bass died 18 Aug 1842 Iredell County, North Carolina. I am hoping that someone with access to his will or probate will post it here. In Aug 1843, The Iredell Co, NC Court of Pleas orders that twelve lawful men "lay off" and allot to Mary Boss (Bass) her dower out of the lands of her dec'd husband Orren Boss and report to the next court. Mary Bass, his widow, appears in 1850 Iredell County, NC census with her daughters. Mary is 70 years old and b VA. Her son Archibald is living next door with his new wife.
I have seen many different names given for Mary (Vinson, McCracken, Blaine, Leonard), wife of Jacob Bass Sr, but have not seen any source for any of them. I am hoping someone can add a source for Mary's maiden name.
Some online trees have Franklin, Macon Co, NC as the birthplace of Orren born c 1770. Franklin, the town, est 1820 that becomes Macon Co in 1828. Too late to be the correct Franklin. Franklin Co, NC established in 1779, in time to be correct for 1790 census.
There is another Oren Bass living in Tennessee. I have seen military records for him, and death citations. I do not see a connection between the two individuals.
There are two sources for Oren's mother, Tabitha Fuller or Bass, that disagree on her surname.
1)Tabitha Ann Fuller which supposedly is based on the Thomas Trowbridge Genealogy. I have checked that reference and there is a Tabitha Fuller b 7 Sept 1734 to Isaac Fuller and wife Hannah Greenwood but no marriage citation to Jacob Bass.
2)There is an unsourced note at FAG that Tabitha was daughter of Charles Bass.
My interest in this line are my Nesbitt and Gilleland connections. Archibald M Bass marries Mary Jane Gilleland and their daughter marries William F Nesbitt. However, I am searching for the maiden name and parents of Catherine b 1803 who married Moses Nesbitt and was widowed young with many children. I am particularly interested in Elizabeth Bass b c 1801, wondering if she might have been an Elizabeth Catherine. I have a profile on Moses Nesbitt, if you might be interested.
