Alan was born in Hobart in 1899.
Alan enlisted in the Australian Army as a Private (T3178) on 26 Jun 1916 claiming to be 18 years old (he was probably still 16). He was a tinsmith, apprenticed to C. Davis of Hobart. He had previously served 4 years in the Cadets. His mother had authorised him for enlistment in the Camp Band at Clarement only. He was accepted for Home Service until discharged on 15 Feb 1917 with his services no longer required. There are indication they had found out he was under age.
He enlisted again on 16 Oct 1917. By this time he was a tram conductor. He was again accepted for home service as a Private (T7196). He was discharged on 25 Jun 1918 to permit him to enlist in the AIF.
He enlisted in the Australian Army again on 26 Jun 1918 at Claremont, TAS as a Private (63227). At the time he was single, a tram conductor and was living with his father in West Hobart. He was 5 ft 9 in tall, with fair hair, grey eyes and medium complexion.
He was appointed A/Cpl in the 3rd General Service Reinforcements (Tas) when he embarked on HMAT "Zealandic" on 05 Oct 1918. He reverted to Private on board on 27 Nov 1918 after time in hospital. He disembarked in England on 05 Dec 1918. Hostilities had ceased but he was allotted to 12th Bn. On 02 Feb 1919 he was sent to France.
He returned to Australia on the "Suevic" on 23 Jul 1919 and was discharged in Tasmania on 28 Sep 1919.
He passed away before 1962.
