Biography

Phoebe Bate was born in 1849 at Claverley, Shropshire. [1]

Phebe, as recorded, was baptised on 31 December 1849 at the parish church of Claverley, the daughter of Daniel Bate, a millwright, and Ann Bate of Griffiths Green. [2]

In the 1851 census the Bate family was still living at Griffiths Green. Father Daniel, aged 28, was a millwright and machinist. Mother Ann was aged 25. Sister Theresa was aged 2 and Phebe [sic] was aged 1. Also living with them was house servant Hannah Harley, aged 12. [3]

In 1861 the family was still at the same address. Phoebe was aged 11 years. Her younger siblings were Daniel aged 10, Moses aged 8, Eanoch [sic] aged 7, Katherine aged 4, Hester aged 3 and Paul aged 1. [4]

In the 1871 census Phoebe was employed as a domestic servant at the home of George and Hannah Andrew at Apsley House, Abney Rd, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire. Her age was incorrectly recorded as 24 years. [5]

Phoebe Bate married John Harman on 16 June 1872 at Holy Trinity Church, Heath Town, Staffordshire. Their marriage certificate recorded John was a bachelor aged 21 and an engineer. His father was named as William Henry Harman, an engineer. Phoebe was a spinster aged 22. Her father was named as Daniel Bate, a millwright. Both were residing at Heath Town at the time of the marriage. Their witnesses were George Harman, John's brother, and Theresa Bate, Phoebe's sister. [6]

This couple had 6 children named Ernest Harman born 19 January 1874, Lilly Harman born 16 October 1875, Carmi Harman born 18 February 1878, Nelly Harman born 17 November 1879, Bernard Harman born 19 September 1891 and May Harman born 17 January 1893. Based on the census Ernest was born at Wolverhampton, Lilly at Walsall, Nelly at Tettenhall and Carmi, Bernard and May at Heath Town, all in Staffordshire.

On 10 April 1878 Carme [sic], the son of John Harman, an engineer, and Phoebe Harman, of Grove Street was baptised at the Cross Street Primitive Methodist Church, Heath Town. His date of birth was recorded as 18 February 1878.
On 4 February 1880 Nelly, the daughter of John Harman, an engineer, and Phebe Harman of Heath Town was baptised at Cross Street Primitive Methodist Church, Heath Town. [7]
On 8 November 1891 Bernard son of John Harman, a fitter, and Phoebe Harman of Prestwood Rd was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Heath Town.
And on 22 March 1893 May, the daughter of John Harman, an engineer, and Phoebe Harman of Prestwood Rd was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Heath Town. [8]

In the 1881 census John and Phoebe were living at Essington Road, Heath Town. John, aged 30, was a forge engine driver. Phoebe was aged 31. Children Earnest [sic], Lilly, Carmi and Nellie [sic] were aged 7, 5, 3 and 1 years respectively. [9]

School Admission Registers for Heath Town Church of England Junior School state Ernest, born 19 January 1874, transferred from the Infant school to the Junior school on 7 November 1881. Ernest was re-registered at this school on 1 June 1885 after transferring in from Wednesfield National School. Neither register recorded a leaving date. His parent was named as John Harman of Prestwood Rd at both registrations. [10]
Lily, born 16 October 1875, transferred from the Infant school to the Junior school on 6 November 1882, starting in Standard I. She was re-registered at the Junior school on 18 April 1887 and again on 9 April 1888. Her parent was named as John Harman of Prestwood Rd. [11]
Carmi, born 18 Feb 1878, commenced at the Junior school on 2 November 1885. He, too, had previously been in the Infants School. On 18 November 1889, and again on 14 April 1890, Carmi was re-registered at the Junior school, having previously been, both times, at H.T. Heath Town [probably Heath Town School]. His parent was named as John Harman of Prestwood Rd. [12]
Ellen [sic] commenced at the Junior school on 1 November 1886. Her date of birth was recorded as 17 November 1879 and her parent was named as John Harman of Prestwood Rd. [13]
Bernard, born 19 September 1891, started at the Infants school on 13 April 1896. He then transferred to the Junior School on 1 November 1899. Bernard left this school on 28 July 1905 and was moving on to Old Hall Street School. His parent was named as John Harman of Prestwood Rd. [14]
May, born 17 January 1893, commenced at the Heath Town Church of England Infants school on 7 September 1896. She was re-registered at the Junior school on 1 November 1900. Her date of birth was recorded as 16 January 1893 in the latter admissions register. Her parent was named as John Harman of Prestwood Rd. [15]

In the 1891 census this family was living at Prestwood Rd, Heath Town. John, aged 40, was an engine driver. Phoebe was aged 41. Ernest, aged 17, was an apprentice fitter. Lily [sic], aged 15, was a pupil teacher. Carmi, aged 13, and Nelly, aged 11, were both attending school. [16]

In 1901 the family was still living at Prestwood Rd, Heath Town. John, aged 50, was then described as a stationery engine driver. Phebe [sic] was aged 51. Carmi, aged 23, was a steam pump fitter. Nelly, aged 21, was a self employed dressmaker, working from home. Bernard was aged 9 and May was aged 8. [17]

Following his father's death in 1904 John inherited his father's walking stick and silver watch. The will also specified that after the death of his mother he was to inherit a portrait of William Henry Harman, William's Family Bible and his mahogany dining table. John also inherited one of four shares in The Wolverhampton and District Money Society Ltd.
John's mother died in 1910. Her will specified her estate was to be divided equally between her seven children. [18]

In the 1911 census the family was living at 327 Prestwood Rd, Heath Town. John, aged 60, was still a stationery engine driver. Phoebe was aged 61. Bernard, aged 19, was a gas fitter and May, aged 18, was a dressmaker. Also living with them was married daughter Lilley Lanford [sic], aged 35, and her three daughters Gladys, aged 10, Sylvia, aged 8, and Ivy, aged 5. [19]

John Harman died in 1918 aged 67 years. [20]

From 1918 Index of Wills and Administrations – HARMAN John of Fair View Cottage Prestwood-road Heath Town Staffordshire died 1 October 1918 Probate Lichfield 28 October to Ernest Harman turner and Carmi Harman works foreman. £635 14s. 7d. [21]

His will read -
This is the last Will and Testament of me John Harman of Fair View Cottage Prestwood Road Heath Town in the County of Stafford.
1. I appoint my sons Ernest Harman and Carmi Harman trustees and executors of this my Will.
2. I give to my wife Phoebe Harman for her own use All my furniture and Household effects and consumable stores (except my silver tea service)
3. I give to my said wife the use for her life of my Silver tea service and I empower her in her lifetime or by her Will to give the same to my Children or to such of them as she shall in her own discretion think proper.
4. I give to my said wife All my ready money Money in the Bank or out on Mortgage and all other my personal property for the support and maintenance of herself and my children under age namely Bernard Harman and May Harman.
5. I give and devise All that my Messuage or dwellinghouse in which I now reside known as Fair View Cottage Prestwood Road Heath Town aforesaid And all other (if any) my Real Estate Unto my said sons Ernest Harman and Carmi Harman Upon Trust to permit my said Wife to reside in my said House if she shall desire to do so or to pay her the rent or income thereof and if all other real Estate for and during her life if she shall remain unmarried And after the death or marriage again of my said Wife then Upon Trust to sell my said real Estate within six calendar months after the death or marriage of my said wife and pay and divide the proceeds of such sale Unto and between all my children then living in equal shares
In witness whereof I have hereunder set my hand this eighteenth day of June One thousand and nine hundred John Harman
Signed by the said John Harman as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us both present at the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunder subscribed our names as witnesses (the alteration "May" for "Mary" on the first page having been first made) H Duncan Stratton, Solicitor, Wolverhampton and F Cooper His Clerk

On the twenty eighth day of October 1918 Probate of this Will was granted at Lichfield to Ernest Harman of Fair View Cottage aforesaid turner and Carmi Harman of Cannock Road Park Village Wolverhampton works foreman the sons the Executors named in the Will. [22]

Phoebe Harman died in 1926 aged 76 years. [23]
