William was born in Halifax, on 19 August 1804, the oldest child of Joseph Bates and his wfe Rebekah née Walker.
Like his father Joseph, William was a textile merchant. He was living in Manningham, near Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1848, when he went to court against his younger brother Joseph.[1]
Towards the end of his life, he lived at Greystone Cottage, Dumfries, Scotland. He died in Dumfries in 1867 and was buried in the church of St Michael's, Dumfries, where there was (at least in 1876) a memorial to him.[2]
