Biography

John was born before 1570. He is the son of Christopher Batt and Alice St Barbe.

Named as brother [in-law] in the 1622 Will of John Windover. [3]

Named as "cousin" John Batt in the 1631 Will of his maternal aunt, Margery St. Barbe. Also mentioned were her cousins Thomas Batt, Edward Hyde, Margery Morrell, and Dorothy Windover (all of them children of her sister, Alice St. Barbe Batt and siblings or half siblings of this John). [4]

“Memorandum. That John Batt the elder late of the Citty of New Sarum in the Countie of Wilts gent, (who deceased the second day of August 1643) and when or about a weeke before his death (being then sick of body, but of good and perfect remembrance) call for a written will of his ? he had formerly made, had tore the same saying it should not stand, and by way of declaring his noncupative will, touching his ? ?, said that he would leave all to his wife (Katherine Batthen ?) for the payment of his debts, for the maintenance of his wife, & of his daughter Katherine, & for the ? of ? for his sonne William Batt & for his said daughter Katherine Batt (having left his daughter Ann to the care and charge of his wife, & of his two eldest sonnes who had promised him to see her provided for) desiring (as his intent still was) that if his wyves & daughter Katherine maintenance & his said daughter ? might be otherwise provided for ? raysed, that then the remainder of the terme of his lease at Milford or for many years thereof as might be spared? should come to his youngest sonne William Batt for his ?, or he spake other words and declared his meaning to be to this effect, ? ? & hearing of divers credible witnesses”
