Biography

James Batten was christened June 14, 1702 in Ardington Parish, Berkshire, England as son of John Battin and Catherine Smith.[1] The spelling of this surname changes occasionally for several reasons. One of the most frequent is to distinguish one branch of the family from another. This can occur when a family has several sons. Another possibility - which I posit occurred here - is to distance oneself from another branch for personal reasons.

I have read a small unpublished genealogy that reports he was raised in Bucklebury, Berkshire County as his mother was dead, but cannot discover documentation. When he came to America also hasn't been found.

Once in America, he gained property and was taxed for the first time in 1731, 7 shillings and 6 pence, as a single man of Marple township, Chester County (now a portion of Delaware County), Pennsylvania.

He requested a Certificate of Removal to go to Great Britain. His cancellation of the request also went to Goshen dated 8th, 30, 1732.

Marriage to Mary Moore (Moor) reported to Goshen mm and Springfield mm on Apr. 19, 1733.[2]

East Caln County Poorhouse record dated Jan. 25, 1849 [?] includes an order to bring him in. He was taxed 9 shillings in 1758 as a tenant in Goshen twp.

The will for his wife Mary Moor dated 18 Aug 1794 and proven 9 Oct 1794 does not mention him so he had died before 1794. Her will mentions their sons John, James and Enoch, and daughter Susanna.[3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
