William Jones Baytop of the Mexican War and Confederate States Army was born about 1819 at "Petsworth", Gloucester, Virginia. He was the son of James Baytop and Lucy Catlett. Captain William Jones Baytop died while leading a charge at Seven Pines on 31 May 1862. He is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

The Battle of Seven Pines, also known as the Battle of Fair Oaks or Fair Oaks Station, took place on May 31 and June 1, 1862, in Henrico County, Virginia, as part of the American Civil War. (Ref: Wikipedia.)

“William Jones Baytop was of the third generation of that name to lead the Gloucester [Virginia] Militia.” Page 61.

“The first Gloucester officer to die in battle was Lt. William Jones Baytop who fell at Seven Pines when he was leading the Gloucester Redshirts.” Page 59.

Footnote

09-11-2020. A descendant of William Baytop reports that William is buried behind his house. William’s grave was exhumed years ago and they matched his broken leg bone with the records from where he was shot. And William had two sons by a slave. When the Civil War started William hid these two sons in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. And these descendants in the Blue Ridge Mountains still have “tons of information on William.”
