Biography

Sylvan Caylor (or Calvin) Beason was born in Cleburne County, Alabama, on November 20, 1901.^[1] His mother was Lola Cordelia Beason. According to a note on her FamilySearch profile, "an old survey taken by Catherine Eddings Storey in January of 2004" noted that Sylvan was a child from a rape and his father is unknown.^[2]

At the 1920 census, Sylvan was eighteen years old and living in Arbacoochee Precinct, Cleburne County, with his mother in the household of his aunt Lonnie Thrower and uncle Absolem Thrower. His younger cousins Theron and Lillie Thrower were also living in the household.^[3]

Sylvan married Jennie Vise in Arbacoochee on February 6, 1921.^[4]

At the 1930 census, Sylvan and Jennie were living at 114 Church St. in Heflin with their daughter Malene. Interestingly, the family lived very close to the jail, although there were no prisoners there at the time that the census was taken.^[5]

At the 1940 census, Sylvan and Jennie were living in Heflin in a home rented for $10 per month with their children Malene, Jimmy, and Donald.^[6]

At the 1950 census, Sylvan and Jennie were living in Heflin with their sons Jimmy and Donald.^[7]

Sylvan died in Anniston, Alabama, on March 21, 1968.^[8] He was buried in the Heflin Cemetery.^[9]

Research Notes

On his World War II draft card, Sylvan's middle name is Caylor. In the Alabama Deaths and Burials Index, it is Calvin.
