Biography

Arthur was born in 1881^[1] in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of John Beckitt and Clara Lockwood.

His mother died in 1888 at the age of 29.^[2] In 1891 Arthur lived with his father and brother in Clee, Lincolnshire.^[3]

At the time of the 1901 census, Arthur worked as a "ship donkeyman" [engineer] in Chirton, Northumberland, boarding with the McLauchin family.^[4] Arthur married Mary Elizabeth McLauchlin in 1902.^[5] The family lived in Tynemouth, Northumberland, in 1911. Arthur was a tugboatman.^[6]
