Jestin Becknell was the first wife of Samuel Spencer.[1]
Based on the 1820 Census she was the mother of one son born 1810-1820 and one daughter born 1810-1820.[2]
The daughter is Mary Jane Spencer Oliver b 1811. The son is probably Samuel L Spencer b 1812.
She died in 1820 after the taking of the 1820 Census which reports she was age 26-44.
On 4 Jul 1878 Nancy Justice Surratt Spencer, widow of Samuel Spencer applied for a War of 1812 Widow's pension, citing her husband Samuel Spencer was a private in Captain Lewis Hale's company, that he enlisted at Grayson County, VA 1 Aug 1814 for 6 months. He was discharged at Norfolk, VA 1 Feb 1815. She described him as age 26, born in Patrick Co VA, farmer, 5 feet 10 inches, blue eyes and fair complexion. She stated she was married to him in Grayson County, VA on the ninth of May 1824 by William (unreadable), Justice of the Peace. Her name before she married him was Nancy Surratt. He was married previously to Jestin Becknell who died in Grayson Co sometime in 1820. She herself had married Abel Surratt who died in Rowan Co NC in 1819. Her name before she married him was Nancy Justice. Her husband Samuel died in Carroll County, Virginia 30 May 1861.
