Biography

Thomas Bendish was probably the firstborn son of Thomas Bendish of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and Bridget Ireton, granddaughter of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector, daughter of Henry Ireton and Bridget Cromwell. He was born some time after 1671.

Thomas Bendish apparently married twice: first, in St Mary's Islington by Licence issued 4 May 1697/8, to Anne Ward of Gestwick, Norfolk.[1] In 1700, at All Hallows London Wall, he married secondly to Catherine Smith of Colkirk Norfolk by Vicar General Licence.[2] It was from this marriage that he undoubtedly acquired his property at Colkirk.

Waylen [3]claims that Thomas's son, Ireton Bendish, named as under age in Thomas's Will [4] was a child of the first wife, Anne Ward. This son enjoyed a place under Government and died in 1730 unmarried. [5]

Thomas Bendish was in Colkirk when he wrote his Will on 20 November 1717, but he died in the West Indies (Jamaica) where 'he had a considerable property, and to which he was obliged from his extravagance to retire'. Probate of his Will was granted 15 June 1724. ln it, he named his brother Henry Bendish, his son Ireton Bendish, and his wife Catherine.

Research notes

According to Boyd's Inhabitants of London, Thomas Bendish was the son of Edmond Bendish of Norfolk. This is undoubtedly an error, as Thomas Bendish is known to be the son of Thomas Bendish of Great Yarmouth Norfolk.[6]
