Biography

Additional transcriptions of records for William Bendry (d. bet 15 Jan 1700 - 10 Apr 1701) of Essex Co VA can be found on the website: Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties

William Bendry married bet.1683-1685 Elizabeth Moss, daughter of Thomas Moss and Elizabeth (possibly Wales) of Old Rappahannock County VA. With Elizabeth Moss he had two documented children, Thomas and Anne. Bendry mentioned only Thomas and Anne in his will, although there was a gap of just over a year between its writing and probate dates -- time enough to have had another child, though had there been another child, it seems strange he made no provision for it.

He wrote his will on 15 Jan 1700 in Essex County and noted that he was "...sick and weake in body but of sound & perfect memory..." Wife Elizabeth and son Thomas were to be executors, and the will was witnessed by Robert Brooke, himself (Wm. Bendry), and Robert Moseley. It was proved 15 months later on 10 April 1701. He directed the following bequests:

  • To son Thomas Bendry, two negroes named Phillip and Young Flora
  • To wife Elizabeth, two negroes named Old Flora and Bess
  • To daughter Anne, one small negro boy called Phillip
  • To son Thomas, "my black Horse called Button and the Mare which brought him"
  • To wife Elizabeth, a young horse and mare and "my old horse"
  • To wife Elizabeth and son Thomas and daughter Anne, "all my cattle to be equally divided"
  • To wife Elizabeth and son Thomas and daughter Anne, "I give two Servts. called Richard Owen and Mary Broon to be appraised and the produce of them to be equally divided"
  • To wife Elizabeth and son Thomas and daughter Anne, "I give all my household goods to be equally divided"
  • To Capt. Slaughter and Mr. Nicholas Morgan, the tobacco they are owed, the remainder to be divided between Bendry's wife and children
  • To son Thomas, "all my land houses orchards & all other improvemts, which are on the plantation & land whereon I now live"
  • To wife Elizabeth (and heir heirs forever), "all the land houses orchards which are upon the land and plantation which I purchased of Capt. Francis Slaughter"
  • To wife Elizabeth and son Thomas and daughter Anne, "all my sheep and hoggs" to be equally divided.
