Biography

William Bennington (c. 1770 Harford, Maryland - 1820? Boone, Kentucky) was the son of William Bennington Sr. and Constant Barnes.

On 12 Apr 1793 in Bourbon, Kentucky, United States, William Bennington Jr. married Margaret Smith[1] daughter of Robert Smith and Mary Huston.

They settled in Fleming, Kentucky where their first four children were born and then moved to Boone, Kentucky.

Children are believed to include:

  1. Mary Elizabeth Bennington (1792 Fleming, Kentucky - 1838) married (1) John Hester, (2) Elisha Haines
  2. William Bennington (1798 - 1851) married Rebeca Kelly[2]
  3. Robert Smith Bennington (1800 - 1890) married Olive Susan Samson
  4. Thomas Bennington (1802 - 1856) married Cynthia Ann Mason
  5. Joseph Bennington (1804-1879) married Ann Allen Perkins
  6. Constant Bennington (1806 Boone, Kentucky - 1842) married William Dillman Hester[3]
  7. Rebecca Bennington (1809 - 1892) married John McCann
  8. Sarah Bennington (1812 - 1863) married James S. Shanklin

  • Page 20 of John Hester Ancestry by Searl states: "Since John, his sister Abigail and brother William D Hester married grandchildren of William Bennington, Sr. (1726-1801) some items of interest relative to that family and the Robert Smith family should be mentioned. These two families with the Hesters, Gilberts, Hillis's, etc were among the first settlers of Fleming Co, KY. In fact William Bennington, Sr. was the oldest man living in the county as he was born in 1726 or 1729 in Harford Co, Maryland. Robert Smith was the 2nd oldest as he was born in 1733 and came to America as a Scotch sailor. In the first plot of Flemingsburg naming streets and alleys, it is shown that William Bennngton owned some of the lots.
