Daniel was born in 1839. He was the son of Peter Benson and Susannah Heil. He passed away in 1881.
For now-unknown reasons, around the time of his father Peter's death, the family surname was changed from Benson to Delaney. In the 1860 census Peter and his sons were going by Benson, but by the 1870 census all of Peter's sons (sans John) were going by Delaney. Peter himself is, at different times, posthumously referred to by both surnames, leading one to believe the name change may have happened after his death.
