Biography

Alice Elsie Benson was born about 1892 at Mologa, Victoria, the daughter of Martin Joseph Benson and Emily Mary Kerr. Her birth does not seem to have been registered, though she is mentioned as being one year old on her younger sister's birth registration in 1893. ^[1]

Marriage. On 18th March, 1924, aged 30, Alice Elsie Benson married George Coventry Randall, at 237 Park Street, City of South Melbourne. Alice said she was born Mologa, Victoria, the daughter of Martin Lawrence Benson, Railway Employee, and Emily Mary Kerr. Alice gave her occupation as Home Duties, no doubt performed at their mutual residence at the time of their marriage: 129 Ferrars Street, South Melbourne.

George said he had been divorced since 17th October, 1923, and had three living children from that marriage. He was a 47-year-old Butcher, born Seymour, Victoria, the son of Samuel Coventry Randall, Laborer, and Mary Ann McMillan.

The ceremony was performed by George Marris, Registrar of Marriages, before witnesses Florence Guerin and Annie M. Gama?r. ^[2]

Death. Alice Elsie Randall passed away in 1963, age recorded at 71 years. Her death was registered Beaumaris, Victoria, giving High Camp Plain as her birthplace, and her parents as Martin Benson and Emily Mary Kerr. A death notice, published in the Melbourne newspaper The Age on 4th June 1963, says Alice Elsie Randall passed away on 3rd June. ^{[3] [4]}

Burial. Following a service on 5th June 1963, her remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion, Fawkner Memorial Park. ^[5]

Research Note

In the Victorian indexes, in 1894, her sister Sarah's birth and death were registered at Heathcote. The child before Alice was registered at Yea in 1891.

Mologa is not near either of Yea or Heathcote, but is north-west of Bendigo towards Kerang. (Please note: registration places are the ones shown in the indexes - not necessarily the birth or death places as listed on the actual certificates.)

Her death certificate says Alice was born High Camp Plains, and this is a locality near Broadford, Victoria, and would explain both Yea and Heathcote as registration places.

But, in the absence of a birth registration, one can't be sure of her actual birthplace and must go with what she has said herself when she wed.
