Gustav was born in 1857 at Mellangården, Larstorp, in Remmene parish, Sweden. [1] His mother was Anna Stina Johannesdotter, born in 1829. He was confirmed in the Herrljunga church. In April, 1885, he emigrated to Carver County Minnesota.[2] His brother Johannes (John in the United States) and his mother arrived a year later. He and his brother changed their last name to Bergstrom after arriving in the U.S. Gustav married Johanna (Anna) Sofia Bergstrom in July of 1887. Johanna came from the same parish in Sweden, having emigrated with her parents in 1881. Johanna's father Carl and Gustav's mother Anna Stina were cousins. Both of them were grandchildren of Lars Jonsson Bergström, hence the shared last names before marriage. The Carver Free Press reports on August 17, 1897 that Gustav and his brother John "returned from Montana where they worked upon the railroad. They report that times are mighty hard out there and that all factories &c are shut down." In 1901, Gustav and Anna moved to a farm near East Union and lived there until 1906. They lived in Carver, Minnesota from 1906 until 1920 and then moved to a home in San Francisco township, outside of Carver village. [3]
