Notes of Nora Cline and Karen Brubaker, both descendents of Charles. Charles Berkshire is the forerunner of the Berkshires in Carrol County. With his parents, 34-year-old Charles came to Clark County, Indiana Territory from North Carolina in 1804. Four years later he married Sarah Hickman. They settled on a farm in Franklin Township, Harrison County, Indiana. By November the couple had Rebecca, the first of twelve children. The law required all able-bodied men to become members of the Indiana Territorial Militia. Charles, a healthy sort, fit the requirements. At the outbreak of the Tecumseh War in the fall of 1811, he received orders for active duty, which began October 23, 1811. Leaving Sarah with little Rebecca, and baby Solomon, Charles traveled to the Lafayette vicinity with the Kentucky Mounted Riflemen under Captian Geiger. There the Riflemen joined a larger force led by William Henry Harrison. On November 7th, 1811, these forces engaged in the Battle of Tippecanoe against the Shawnee Indians. One of 126 soldiers wounded in the battle, Charles felt lucky to have survived. By November 18, 1811 his short military career had ended. The wound, though not fatal, necessitated amputation of his arm and would have a lasting effect throughout the rest of his life. For his 27 days of military service, he earned $5.92. His horse allowance of $10.80 brought the total to $16.72. Although he purchased more farm land in what would later become Floyd County. Charles must have seen something he liked in the more northern part of the state. In 1830 after the settlement of his parent's estate, he sold his own land holdings and moved his family to Carroll County, Indiana, where they would settle in Rock Creek Township as squatters. At this point in their lives, Charles and Sarah's twelve children ranged from ages 22 to 2. Charles himself was 50. All but one of the family moved here. Hiram, the fourth child, had become a favorite of his Uncle John and remained with him. Rebecca, the eldest, had married William Cronk Jr. in December, 1826. She and William accompanied her parents to Carroll County, where they too bought a farm in Rock Creek Township. At the first land sale at Lafayette in 1831, Charles purchased 160 acres. Acquisition of land parcels of various sizes became a pattern which Charles would repeat the rest of his life. In 1840 the family buried him, along with his son who died five months later, in a plot near their home, later to become known as the Guthrie Cemetery. When Charles died, Hiram, the final member of the family to call Carroll County home, moved near his widowed mother. Sarah died within two years of Charles. Carroll County was to become a place where the eleven remaining Berkshire children, though they might leave for several years, would return. Consequently, their family names appear in old cemeteries throughout the county.
Since this time the family has migrated back and forth and now include not only Carroll County, but Cass, Miami, and Howard counties. 18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)18:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
