Biography

Howes Berry was born on 28 Jan 1765 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony [1] as the eighth child of Isaac Berry (1728-1803) and Sarah (Crowell) Berry (1732-1819). His given name, Howes, was his maternal grandmother's surname. He had eleven full siblings, namely: James, Jeremiah, Rebecca, Isaac, Onan, Sarah, Hannah, Joseph, Judah, Anna, and Mary. [2] And after his father remarried he had six more half siblings, namely: Ebenezer, Lydia, Nance, John, Marcy and Benjamin. Howes Berry and all his siblings, with the exception of Judah who died young, were named in the will of his father, Isaac Berry on 22 Aug 1798. [3]

Howes Berry died on 13 Dec 1822 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA or as the family bible states 11 Dec 1822. [4]

When he was 26, he married Ruth (Gray) Berry (1773-1868), daughter of Gideon Gray (1732-) and Mary (Baker) Gray (1743-1813), on 17 Nov 1791 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA (by Rev. Timothy Alden). [5]

He was a Mariner and lived in Yarmouth his entire life. [6] In the Yarmouth Tax List of 01 Oct 1798 he was living on land owned by his father-in-law, Gideon Gray (1732-). [7] He also appears in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 cenuses in Yarmouth. [8] [9] [10]

Howes Berry died intestate. His estate was probated on 08 Apr 1823 when administration of his estate was granted to Ruth. [11] On 13 May 1823 Ruth was given a Widow's allowance of $144.25. [12] On 12 Aug 1823, Ruth was granted guardianship of their minor children. On 09 Aug 1825 an an accounting of Howes Berry's estate was presented by Administratrix, Ruth Berry). [13]

  • Lucy Berry was born on 18 Jul 1795 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 29 Mar 1873 in West Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. She married Isaac Baker in Jan 1816 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA (By Rev. T. Alden).
  • Isaac Berry was born on 18 Nov 1798 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. He died on 19 Nov 1821 in New York, USA.
  • Sarah Berry was born on 14 Nov 1801 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 18 Mar 1889 in Dennis, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. She married Elkanah Sears on 08 Dec 1836 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA (Family bible has 9 Dec 1836, by Rev. N. Cogswell).
