In 1847, a band of people came to Cherokee Co., Texas from Edgefield, S.C. including the Berrys, Martins, Nicholsons, Jennings, Colemans and Gentrys. After arriving in Cherokee Co., Texas, and settling in the community they first named Edgefield, then in 1854, changed the name to Sardis.
John Jackson and Peter Berry, his twin brother, joined the Indian War of 1836.
John Berry died 10 Sep 1898, at his home with a fever. He is buried in the Little cemetery once called Manilla, a few yards from his old home place. Now the cemetery is named Berry Cemetery, Cherokee County, Texas
