John Berry arrived in Madison County 1801, and is considered the founder of the village of Madison. He settled a little south of where the village center now lies, Not long after he sold the homestead to his son Samuel, who later sold it to Erastus Cleveland, son-in-law of the elder Berry, under an agreement that Cleveland should thenceforth care for Samuel's father and mother. Samuel Berry went west, and John Berry and his wife passed their days with Cleveland, both dying in 1821. They are buried in Madison Village Cemetery and share a gravestone with Erastus Cleveland and his wife.
