Biography

Was a carpenter. Noted on son's marriage record as 'Billiard'. Numerous date discrepancies exist for John's demographic information: the 1921 Canada census notes John's age as 68, implying a birth year of 1853, but his death certificate notes a birth date of May 21, 1855. His death certificate also states date of death as January 4, 1923, but his findagrave entry states January 3, 1923, with a year of birth as 1858. Entries from death certificate are used as most definitive demographic data.

Burial site: Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada [1]

Channel Anglican Marriages

What follows is a list of all Pike marriages up to 1940 in the Channel Anglican church records held at PANL as of September 2009. This list constitutes a typescript of my handwritten extraction from photocopies of the original records, which is to say that I may have inadvertantly introduced some errors while transcribing and typing... as always, you should double-check against the original records. That said, if you spot any mistakes that I have made, please let me know at dapike@mun.ca. Additional Pike entries from other Newfoundland church records can also be found on my website.

Some comments about this list:

The entries below are in the same order as presented in the church records, which was not always in chronological order. Unless I mistakenly overlooked an entry or two, this is a complete list of all Pike entries up to 1940, including all entries where one of the marriage witnesses had Pike in his/her name. I also included instances in which somebody's middle name was Pike. At PANL these records are on microfilm as follows: 1852 - 1878 (Reel 51) 1878 - 1929 (Reel 49) 1929 - 1940 (Reel 24) I transcribed the records from reels 51 and 49 in March 2005. I transcribed the records from reel 24 in Sept 2009. Other marriages, for later years (up to 1982) are on other reels (46, 47, and 50), but I have not yet extracted any of these. The format of most of the entries that follow is as follows:

Line 1: Marriage Number, and Groom's name, abode, occupation, etc Line 2: Bride's name, abode, etc Line 3: Marriage date and location Line 4: List of witnesses Entries are separated by one or more blank lines.

George Henry Billard 55 widower Checker Agent C.N.R. Sydney N.S. father: John Billiard Carpenter Mildred Tulk 43 spinster Teacher St John's father: William Tulk Teacher 4 July 1937 in the Church of St James, Channel John Pike, Capt D Brinton, Olive Field [note: "Agent" in George's occupation appears to be crossed out]
