OBITUARY. There passed away recently at Geraldine one of the pioneers of Auckland district, in the person of Mr Peter Billings. Born in Jersey, Channel Islands, eighty-eight years ago, Mr Billings left home at the age of twelve and for a number of years was at sea in various parts of the world. In the early days Mr Billings served with the Forest Rangers under Major Von Tempsky. Later he was in charge of a schooner trading between Whangarei Heads. Kawau Island and Auckland. Later he came to Winchester, where he worked on the first railway line and viaduct construction between Timaru and Christchurch, and helped to sink the cylinders for the Rangitata Bridge. For eighteen years he worked with the Geraldine Road Board, and later with the Geraldine County as clerk of works for twenty years. Mr Billings is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs T. W. Fulton, Paeroa; Mrs P. Prouting, Christchurch; Miss E. Billings, Christchurch; Mrs W. Double, Temuka; Mrs G. Hopkinson, Temuka; Mrs F. Beaven, Geraldine; Messrs P. and R. Billings, Geraldine; J. Billings, Ashburton; and E. Billings, Christchurch.[2]
