Biography

Charles was born in July 1856 in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, England. His father Charles was 33 and his mother Sarah was 34. Charles was baptised on 6th June 1858 in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, England. In June 1878 Charles married Elizabeth Wright in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. They had seven children together, but sadly three of them died young.

1881 England Census Charles is 24 years of age and living at no 13. Collingdon Street, Luton, Bedfordshire, England with his wife Elizabeth (27) and children Edith (9 months) and his mother-in-law, widowed, age 55.


1891 England Census Shows Charles Bird (35) living at 13 Collingdon Street, Luton, Bedfordshire, England with his wife Elizabeth (38) and children: Edith (10), Henry (9), Arthur (7), Cecilia (3) and his mother-in-law Elizabeth Wright (65). On the census Charles is shown as a glass and lead merchant. His business was in Collingdon Street, Luton. The picture on this page shows an advertising hoarding giving details of the business.

1901 England Census Charles is now 44 years of age and living at 43 Dunstable Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, England with his wife Elizabeth (48) and children Edith (20), Henry (19), Arthur (17) and Cecilia (13)


1911 England Census Charles is now 54 years of age and living with his wife Elizabeth (57) in Luton. Only one of the children is shown as still living at home, Cecilia (23).
