Biography

The daughter of George Bishop and Mary (Marshall) Bishop, Marietta was born in Avon in 1838.[1][2][3] Sometime before 1865, her parents migrated west, settling in Marengo Township, Michigan, in Calhoun County.[4] Marietta married John Cleveland Welles (1840-1916), the son of William Edwin Welles and Harriet Prentice, early settlers to Calhoun County. Marietta and John married in Marengo Township on November 2, 1871; their children included:

  1. Minna Hale Wellss (1872-1962)
  2. William Bishop Welles (1875-1940)
  3. Edith Anna Welles (1879-1970)

Her husband was an inventor and pattern and model maker; in 1880, they resided in Marshall Township, his hometown.[5] In 1900, they resided in Marengo Township; their daughter, Minna, worked as a clerk at the post office.[6] In 1910, residing in Marengo, her husband owned an enterprise that manufactured templates for regulators; Minna worked as a public school teacher.[7]

Her husband passed away in 1916; later that year, Marietta lived in Marshall with her son, William, who was a superintendent for the postal service.[8] In 1921, she lived alone, boarding at 715 Locust Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan.[9] She passed away in Marshall, Michigan at the age of 90[10] and is buried at Oakridge Cemetery there.[11]
